Do your eyes look tired and sad, even though you feel well? Do your eyelids feel heavy and do you have the impression that your field of vision is narrowing?
This may be due to sagging and drooping eyelids (hooded eyelids). Over time, the skin around the eyes changes, loose eyelids and bags under the eyes quickly make the facial expression appear tired and can lead to a restricted field of vision.
A plastic procedure on the eyelids can help in this case.
Upper Eyelid Lift (Blepharoplasty)

The eyelids on both sides are measured, and then excess soft tissue is removed. The procedure takes about 45 minutes for both eyes, and you can go home immediately after the treatment.

The eyelid lift does not change the shape or expression of your eyes. The goal is to relieve you from any restrictions. At the same time, your eyes will look fresher and "radiate" like they used to.
Before the Treatment
Any existing allergies must be discussed beforehand. If you are taking blood thinners, these must be discontinued for a certain period before the surgery (depending on the type of blood thinner). Please consult your general practitioner if necessary. You may eat breakfast or have your usual meals on the day of the operation.
The eyelid lift is performed on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia.
After the Treatment
You will usually go home with an eye bandage, so you should not drive yourself. It is advisable to have someone accompany you, especially if both eyelids are treated.
The bandage can be removed by yourself on the day after the procedure. Your eye area will be swollen and red for several days. Small bruises will likely form, and you may experience a feeling of tightness. These changes usually heal within one to two weeks.
You should apply eye ointment several times a day to care for the wound and promote proper healing. Typically, a follow-up appointment will be scheduled to check the progress and remove the stitches.
Other minor plastic procedures that can be performed on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia:
- Removal of under-eye bags
- Correction of eyelid malpositions (e.g., ectropion, entropion, ptosis)
- Removal of chalazion (stye) and eyelid warts
- Removal of eyelid tumors (e.g., basal cell carcinoma/white skin cancer)
- Small surgeries on the tear ducts
Frequently Asked Questions About Eyelid Lift Surgery
What methods of eyelid lift surgery are there?
To correct drooping eyelids and give the eyes a more alert appearance, the so-called upper eyelid lift (blepharoplasty) is suitable. For treating under-eye bags, the lower eyelid lift is recommended. In both methods, the incisions are made as inconspicuously as possible so that any scars are barely visible afterward.
What should you keep in mind after eyelid surgery?
After eyelid surgery, it is helpful to cool your eyes to reduce swelling. Additionally, you should get plenty of rest and avoid direct sunlight. Any swelling, bruising, and tightness usually disappear on their own after a few weeks. You can typically resume physical activities after about 2 weeks. The stitches are usually removed after approximately 1 week.
How long does the effect of an eyelid lift last?
The effect of an eyelid lift usually lasts for more than 10 years. However, due to the natural aging process of the connective tissue, the eyelids can eventually begin to sag again after some time. At our private ophthalmology clinics in Linz and Vienna, you can have the treatment repeated as needed.
What are the risks of an eyelid lift?
An eyelid lift is generally considered to be very low-risk. Since an eyelid lift is a surgical procedure involving the skin tissue, there are general surgical risks such as postoperative bleeding, wound healing complications, or vascular injuries. At our private ophthalmology clinics in Linz and Vienna, we usually perform the eyelid lift under local anesthesia, which eliminates the risks associated with general anesthesia.
Are scars visible after an eyelid lift?
In our private ophthalmology practices in Linz and Vienna, we pay special attention to discreet incision placement. For upper eyelid lifts, we make the incision in the natural crease of the eyelid. After successful wound healing, the scars are usually barely noticeable there.
What costs can be expected for an eyelid lift?
The costs for an eyelid lift at our private ophthalmology clinics in Linz and Vienna vary depending on the extent of the treatment. We will gladly provide you with a detailed cost estimate during a personal consultation.
